Application Development - Functional Cellulose Scientist

SUMMARY

Provide technical support to Sales Staff and develop product applications for ‘Functional Celluloses‘ like Microcrystalline Cellulose (MCC), Microcrystalline Cellulose Gel (MCG), Methyl Cellulose (MC), Hydroxy Propyl Methyl Cellulose (HPMC).  Research and understand the benefits of company’s products and benchmark them against competing hydrocolloid products. 

  • Support the sales and marketing team with technical information and custom applications.
  • Maintain complete understanding of Company’s Functional Celluloses and their applications.
  • Develop compounds and formulations.
  • Analyze competitors’ products and research their applications.
  • Develop arguments and strategies to position Company’s products against competition.

Responsibilities:

  1. Assist the sales team with technical aspects of their customer requests.
  2. Develop pertinent product applications.
  3. Perform various laboratory testing for product functionality (e.g. rheometer, viscometer, Bostwick).
  4. Travel with sales team to customers to demonstrate the benefits of Company’s products. 
  5. Develop product presentations (Functional Fiber 101) and present them to technical and non-technical audiences.
  6. Handle all administrative functions of the position.
  7. Maintain regular consistent and professional attendance, punctuality, personal appearance and adherence to all relevant policies and procedures

Minimum Requirements:

  • Bachelor’s degree in Food Science or a science related field
  • Five years of technical experience in a food-related, hydrocolloid industry with specific experience in formulating beverages, frozen desserts and dressings/sauces; rheology experience a plus
  • In depth understanding of FDA, USDA, FSIS regulations, GMP’s, SOP’s, the product development process, functional ingredients and applicable processing equipment and procedures
  • Proficient with MS Office, particularly Outlook, Word, Excel and PowerPoint
  • Able to communicate (written and oral in person and on the telephone) technical information
  • Good and effective organizational skills and able to keep accurate detailed records
  • Able to work independently within area of responsibility
  • Effective time management skills and able to prioritize multiple customer accounts
  • Operates lab equipment (e.g. rheometer, viscometer, Bostwick, blenders, mixers, ovens, scales) and production processing equipment.
  • Consults frequently with sales personnel and staff in QA/QC, Purchasing and Production. 
  • Interacts with customers (in person and by telephone, e-mail, fax and mail).
